Exhibition Space
Each Team will have wall space of approximately 9′ high by 12′ wide including approximate 3′ in front of the wall for models and other projections from the wall. The Thoreau Center has only a few pedestals for exhibition, so you may need to inquire at CCA about using additional pedestals if they are needed. The exhibition wall is constructed of gyp.bd over wd. studs. We intend to locate the studs with a stud finder to assist any of you who may want to add a shelf or other heavier presentation. I encourage each team to visit the Thoreau Center before the end of the semester and in sufficient time to help plan for your final presentation on December 10th/13th.
Any specific questions regarding the space can be directed to Bruce DeMartini at Email: bruce@thoreau.org and Web:www.thoreau.org.
The address of the Thoreau Center is:

Taking the tactic that the best way to make the compact disc more sustainable is to turn music into a more precious commodity, we intend to transform the traditional record store into a cd-free music downloading environment. The store will serve as a platform that allows listeners to discover and purchase digital music and accompanying album artwork. Digital music is a gift of sustainability, where very little product is needed in order to enjoy a great depth of experience, with historical and emotional associations. This idea will be at the forefront of our explorations and developments of the digital music store going forward, and an integral part of the store itself.
We believe that we are at a unique crossroads in music appreciation, sharing, and storage. Primary in our first phase of research was the belief that music is a tangible, warm, communal thing that people from all ages and income brackets want to enjoy. Lost in the rush to the digital format was the importance of the journey of discovery and a sense of context to what was being downloaded.
Plan of attack.
In the coming weeks, we plan to build a full-scale environment mock-up of the main parts of the cd-free music store. These include:
*a new system for learning about and exchanging information on site whereby customers can build upon the contributions of others and learn about the geographic origins of music.
*scale models to show basic layout and hierarchy of important sections to the store.
*a new way to download and view album artwork.
For our second round of revised prototyping, we plan on re-visiting our interview subjects and walking them through the new concepts. This will insure a solid design that fills realistic needs while pointing a way to the future.

Statement intent: diaper project
11/06/06
To reduce diaper waste the diaper recycling service will be introduced to community in San Francisco. To have a successful diaper service the service will meet users’ key concerns about diapers are: Ease, Environment, Health, and Cost. The system provides users easier diaper purchasing and disposal. The goal of the system is not only reducing diaper waste but also providing people beneficial diaper information and an easier system to use diapers.
In order to spread out the system among people a public campaign and information of the diaper service are important. People are interested in information that is useful for them depending on the time i.e. pregnancy or new parent, they need to know different types of information. For instance pregnant women might want to know information of diapers and the diaper service to prepare for their baby and those information should be posted at pregnant class, hospital, baby retail stores and so on. (New born moms- easy and convenient @ baby store, magazine, TV /Others and mothers- environments impact of diapers @ transportation area, macy’s, IKEA, day care centers ) So it is necessary to spread out information at appropriate places in order to get their attention and awareness of diapers.
Besides the public advertising, it is important to consider the convenience of the service and the efficiency of diapers and related products, which are provided by the service. The products provide easier, healthier life and relieve environmental impact. The key points are no smell, easy ordering, and easy disposing.
We have considered the following in what is necessary to make this project a reality:
Business development- cost, non profit, funding/sponsorship, resources of existing business i.e. cloth diaper services.
Information system- system booklet explaining business, recycling process and service, pamphlet of basic info for new parents in hospital within a gift pouch, pamphlet released publicly i.e. OBGYN, natural resources, planned parenthood, baby stores, weekly pamphlet of updates delivered each week with new diapers & pail, printed diapers.
Advertising/Outreach- follow system of education on service done by SF recycling program, public recognition- newspaper ads, magazines (SF magazine), T.V. commercials, bus, street, BART, events/stores.
Service Products- weekly recycling box, travel bags, diapers made from recycled & natural materials, promotional toys, printed diapers with information /patterns /recipes/happy facts etc, uniform, facilitating high use such as day care- diaper containment.
Graphic Identity/Name- branding for continuity of service products
Environment- testing within home environment- technology & interaction, focus group, delivery & pickup.
Deliverables
We have decided to recognize all of the above and represent them as considerations of our project. The following are the prototypes we are continuing with.
Story book- Extended brief on service
Gift pouch- Hospital pamphlet & introductory diaper
Hospital pamphlet- Simple explanation of service and diapering health
Representation of Ads-Magazine ad
Printed diaper-Example of information diaper
Recycling box/travel bag-Functioning box with charcoal
Promotional toys- Odor free sample
Environment- In home
Lifecycle Photo/Video Permission form
Please use this form if you plan to use any of your interview images as part of your final project that will be on display at CCA or The Thoreau Center for Sustainability. This only applies to private interviews, not images that you took in public places. It is especially important for Barbie and Diaper teams if you are using images of children as you must have permission to use them publically.
Contact the person (or parent) and let them know that you are sending 2 copies of the form and that they need to return one to you signed (or do it in person) as soon as they receive it. Turn in the returned forms to Katherine for CCA’s records.

GOAL: To connect purchasing and end-of-life behaviors through cell phone leasing program.
o Increase user satisfaction with cell phones and service providers by giving them the opportunity to try out models before purchasing or during leasing.
o Reduce valuable electronic waste going to landfill or sitting in homes. (By ensuring cycling through leasing program)
o Increase pressure on manufacturers to make cell phones easier to repair and disassemble (shell, hardware, and software) by moving responsibility up to the service provider.
IN-STORE ADD-ON ENVIRONMENT
Adding in-store testing environments for customers to try models and
sign-up.
Next Steps
1) Use floor plan to design experiences based on the analogies below.
2) Test layouts and renderings of the 3 top ranked design and test in nave at CCA or public location. Role play and discuss findings with T-mobile employees at Van Ness St or Powell St store.
3) Use feedback to focus on one design direction. Use computer modeling to iterate.
4) Finalize design and decide final prototyping approach.
5) Test prototype and document more in depth.
6) Analyze findings and prepare for presentation of entire experience.
INTERNET MAIL ORDER EXPERIENCE
Internet & mail experience (story board of experience)
Next Steps
1) Collect questionnaires from screen prototype and packaging prototypes sent out and discuss feedback.
2) Further develop characteristics of experience to finalize storyboard.
3) Test storyboard along with in-store experience to get feedback on this part of the service.
4) Analyze findings and prepare for presentation of entire experience.
