Gretchen Addi (gaddi@ideo.com)

Gretchen Addi is currently leading the development of a point of view for IDEO called THRIVE, to better understand the needs of an aging population in the US and, in turn, to better inform IDEO in the design of products, services, and spaces for them.

At IDEO, she has participated in such diverse projects as future work environment scenarios for Accenture; redesign of the atrium experience for SFMOMA; an exploration into the future of healthcare through the patient and family experience; international interviews and observations around baby and home care products; and customer profiles for a financial services start-up.

During her career, Gretchen has worked for various large and small design and architecture firms in the US and abroad on a wide range of retail, commercial, and healthcare projects. She is a speaker at various design conferences and has organized a number of seminars and events for professional organizations.

Gretchen holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honors from Colorado State University, as well as art history studies at the University of Vienna and art and language studies at the Sorbonne in Paris. She is NCIDQ certified as an interior designer, a lecturer at California College of Arts in San Francisco, and served as an advisor to the AIA National Interiors Committee, which she chaired in 1997-1998.

Alex Grishaver agrishaver@ideo.com

Alex Grishaver is a Location Lead and Senior Interaction Designer at IDEO. Alex joined IDEO in 1997 and has worked on a wide range of projects, from hardware to software to design research: consumer financial software, numerous online applications, workplace studies of social interaction, modular products for office panel systems, and medical products for invasive procedures, among many others.

Alex has played a variety of roles on these projects, including designer, design researcher, design lead and project lead. Most recently, Alex has been a Client Relationship Manager for IDEO’s extensive work with HBO, and has led numerous HBO projects – from strategic initiatives to specific product development efforts. Alex also heads a group of interaction designers in the San Francisco office.

Before coming to IDEO, Alex oversaw user research efforts at Personal Health Connections (an online health and wellness startup). Additionally, Alex worked as an art director, illustrator and designer for weekly newspapers before attending the Institute of Design in Chicago. While a Masters student at ID, Alex explored the interplay between people and their built environment while studying commuters’ experiences using Chicago’s elevated train stations, and through designing products for teachers in public high schools. During school, Alex also interned at McDonald’s corporation: he flipped burgers, observed workers, and developed training material based on intuitive cognitive models of cooking.

Alex holds a BA in Art from UC Santa Cruz, and a Masters degree in Product Design from the Institute of Design in Chicago.

Katrin Gosling kgosling@ideo.com

Katrin joined IDEO’s Interaction Design Team in 1999. She has worked for IDEO London, Palo Alto and now she is part of the San Francisco studio. Katrin’s research and interaction design work involves explorations of alternative interfaces for consumer products, and smart, interactive environments, as well as projects focusing on the detailed integration of hardware and software.

Prior to IDEO she worked in the Wearables Group at Philips Research Laboratories in England, for a graphics and multimedia consultancy in Frankfurt, and as a furniture designer in Berlin.

She holds an MA in Computer-Related Design from the Royal College of Art in London, and a BA (Hons) in Industrial Design from Central St Martin’s College of Art and Design in London. Previous to her college education she gained a chamber of commerce degree in furniture design.

Mary Foyder mfoyder@ideo.com

Mary Foyder is a member of the IDEO Design Community. She is part of an IDEO
tam focusing on a strategic communication design assignments which include,
branding, identity design, environmental design, package design, and
corporate communications. Mary has had the opportunity to work with a
variety of clients such as: Nike, McDonalds, the Kansas City Jazz District
Redevelopment Corporation (JDRC), Pepsi, Forest City Development and Bally
Total Fitness.

Prior to coming to IDEO, Mary worked as a graphic design consultant for
various communications firms around San Francisco including Farm Design,
Fitch, Turner Duckworth Associates and Damore Johann Design. Mary Also spent
time in the UK: as an intern at Carter Wong & Partners and as a junior
designer at the London based branding firm Citigate Lloyd Northover. Mary
holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from Western Michigan
University.

When not working she tries to spend as much time as possible visiting the
mountains with her snowboard and taking care of her community garden in the
Mission. (She tries to spend as little time as possible writing her bio.)

Soren DeOrlow sdeorlow@ideo.com

Soren DeOrlow is a member of the IDEO design community. Based out of the San Francisco office, Soren is part of a team focusing on a strategic communication design assignments which include, branding, identity design, environmental design, package design, and corporate communications. Soren has had the opportunity of designing for clients such as: Pepsi, Marriott, HP, Anheuser Busch, Amore Pacific and Cleveland Clinic. Recently, Soren was involved in a brand re-positioning project for Pangea Organics which received an AIGA award for its identity and package design.

Before joining IDEO, Soren worked as a consultant for Some of San Francisco’s elite branding firms, which include Landor Associates, Stone Yamashita Partners, and C2. Having worked as an intern at the internationally renown Studio Dumbar in the Netherlands, he brings design systems thinking as well as a keen sensibility for typography and a unique perspective on identity design. Soren received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the College for Creative Studies, Detroit.

Clark Scheffy cscheffy@ideo.com

Clark Scheffy is a member of the IDEO Design Community.

He came to IDEO to work in the intersections of strategy, branding, industrial design, and time-based media. He enjoys investigating the relationships of designed objects to their emotional content, and seeking designs or methods of communication that are appropriate to client brands and personalities. Clark’s clients have included Steelcase, BusinessWeek, and Forest City Enterprises.

Prior to joining IDEO, Clark worked in the field of civil engineering for the University of California, Berkeley. He also worked as an editor for the …For Dummies series of best-selling how-to books, and has written several books for the brand. He has also toured as a professional musician.

Clark holds a BFA with high distinction in Industrial Design from the California College of the Arts, and a BA with honors in English Literature with a minor in Music Composition from the University of California, Berkeley.

Because work isn’t the only thing, Clark continues to turn pedals as an amateur bike racer, telemark ski and snowboard, and fly-fish when the snow melts.

Anne Pascual apascual@ideo.com

Anne Pascual is a member of IDEO’s Design Community, based in the San
Francisco office where she works as an interaction designer. Prior to joining IDEO, Anne was a co-founding partner of Schoenerwissen/Office for Computional Design, an internationally recognized design firm based in Berlin. Her work included research and development for the public and private sector, for such clients as ZKM (Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe), the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMB+F)
in Germany, MIT Press, and the Museum of Applied Arts Cologne (MAK).

Before reaching out to the digital world, she worked as a photographer and studied
Philosophy, German Philology, and Art History at the University of Cologne
in Germany. In her post-graduate studies at the Academy of Media Design
Cologne, she continued to explore the complexity of social systems and
visual languages, but shifted her focus to information spaces and software.
Her diploma project, “Minitasking,” was recognized by one of the most
important awards of the media arts and design field—the Prix Ars Electronica
Linz, in addition to winning the Transmediale Software Award.

Anne’s work was selected for several exhibitions and presentations worldwide,
including IV 2003 (London), Microwave Festival (Hong Kong), A Decade of
Webdesign (Amsterdam), the Venice Biennale, and Processing.org. She
continues to write on the topic of design thinking for De:Bug Magazine in
Berlin.
